Acoustic or Electric? Finding the Right String Band for Your Day

Most people enquire about a string band with a fairly specific picture in mind. The ceremony walk. Something classical and understated for the drinks reception. That is a perfectly good way to use a wedding entertainment string act. It is also a fairly narrow one.

Electric string acts play an entirely different role. Plugged in and considerably louder, they cover ground that acoustic strings do not go near. Current chart songs, pop, film scores. Genres that have nothing to do with classical performance. The reaction from guests who walked in expecting something more traditional is usually the most memorable part. If you want the wedding drinks reception or early evening to have actual energy rather than background ambience, electric strings are worth a serious look.

Size is the other decision people leave too late. A string quartet fills a room. Four instruments together produce a warmth and richness that a duo cannot replicate, and in a large venue or a long drinks reception that difference is noticeable. In a smaller space, four players can feel like too much. A duo or trio gives you the same musical quality in a format that suits the room. The right answer depends on the venue, the time of day, and what you actually want the atmosphere to feel like. We are happy to talk it through before you commit to anything.

Getting the Most Out of Your String Band Booking

String acts work across more of the day than most couples use them for. The wedding ceremony is the obvious booking. A drinks reception is the next one. What fewer people think about is running the same act through the wedding breakfast and into the early evening. Done well, it gives the day a thread of continuity that a playlist cannot match. It is also usually more economical than booking separate acts for different parts of the day.

On timing: summer Saturdays go faster than most couples expect. The acts with the strongest reviews and the most bookings are not waiting around with open diaries. A year ahead is the sensible benchmark, and for some of our most requested acts that is already cutting it close. If you have seen something on the site that you want, ask now rather than in six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a string band for my wedding?

For a peak summer Saturday, twelve months ahead is the minimum. Some acts on our roster are taken well beyond that. There is more availability in the quieter months, but once a date is gone it does not come back. If you have seen a specific act for a specific date, the time to find out whether it is available is now rather than in six months.

What is the difference between an acoustic and an electric string band?

Acoustic acts play unamplified. The sound is natural and sits under conversation without competing with it. Ceremonies, wedding breakfasts, and background settings are where they work best. Electric acts are louder and play a much wider range of music. Classical is part of the repertoire but so are current songs, pop, and film scores. The two feel completely different in a room. Tell us what the event looks like and we will tell you which makes more sense.

Can a string band learn a specific song for our wedding?

Most acts on our roster will take on a request outside their existing set. There is usually a small additional fee to cover arrangement and rehearsal time. Raise it at enquiry stage and we will confirm what is possible before you commit to anything. The earlier you mention it the better, particularly if the arrangement needs to be written from scratch.

How much space does a string band need at a venue?

A quartet needs roughly two metres by three metres. Four chairs, four music stands, and enough clearance to move. A duo or solo act needs considerably less. If your venue has tight space restrictions or noise limits, flag it when you enquire and we will take it into account when suggesting acts.

Are string bands suitable for outdoor events?

Yes, with some planning. String instruments react badly to direct sun and damp, so a shaded position and a covered backup plan are worth having in place. Most acts are comfortable performing outside and just want to know the setup in advance. It is the kind of thing to discuss before the event rather than on the morning of it.
